Digital Upgrade for London’s Historic Mansion House

RG Jones was commissioned to update the system within the magnificent Mansion House in the heart of the City of London. Built in the age of Hogarth, the Mansion House, then as now, is a symbol of the city as the world’s leading international financial and trading centre.

This rare surviving Georgian town palace in London is steeped in history and provides the Lord Mayor of the City of London with living, working and entertainment space.

RG Jones has a long history installing and maintaining some of the UK’s most recognised high profile public buildings. We work closely on a daily basis with the Mansion House and The City of London Guildhall supporting a variety of events from banquets to conferences. Some 40,000 people visit the Mansion House every year.

It was originally intended to enable the Lord Mayor to represent the City appropriately, and it continues to fulfil this more than 250 years later. The City of London is the oldest continuous municipal democracy in the world – it predates Parliament – and it constitution is rooted in the ancient rights and privileges enjoyed by citizens before the Norman Conquest in 1066. The residence is unique in having its own court of law, since the Lord Mayor is the chief magistrate of the City while in office. There are eleven holding cells (ten for men and one, nicknamed “the birdcage”, for women). Campaigner Emmiline Pankhurst was held here in the early 20th century.

Today the Court of Common Council governs the City of London Corporation. When not abroad, the Lord Mayor sees on average a head of state or government at least once a month and hosts a finance minister or ambassador weekly. These are usually highly focused meetings between the visitors and City businesses, and they are part of a busy schedule of business visitors/ meetings at Mansion House.

The AV project has been split into two parts. The first phase was the Main Hall (aka The Egyptian Hall) which has now been completed. RG Jones Project Engineer Jamie Short explained “We were commissioned to replace the old analogue system with a fully automated digital system. We installed touch screen control using custom-built software panel, built around Yamaha LS9s. We also installed a full patching system for flexibility and a Shure radio mic system.”

The second phase of the project is to replace the loudspeakers. These will be replaced with AXYS® Intellivox V-90. Jamie continued “These speakers are designed for use on platforms and in high ceiling corridors, to minimise spill over a large bandwidth outside the listening area, the column is designed to be mounted vertically and can be mechanically aimed according to desired throw.”
